It was unthinkable to many Englishmen in 1920 to imagine that within a mere thirty years the greatest empire ever established would no longer exist. The Austinian model is a reminder that an elegant and relatively simple idea expressed in a coherent and consistent manner can have traction and important effects in the real world in which it is invoked, irrespective of its inherent validity.
